Papyex® Graphite Foil a true Asbestos substitute

Papyex® is a flexible form of Graphite manufactured by rolling under pressure expanded graphite flakes to make a homogenous sheet without the use of adhesives.

Being highly resistant to temperature and chemical attack Papyex® offers the perfect replacement to Asbestos. Papyex® is naturally ideal for sealing applications, but due to its unique combination of thermal and electrical properties not found in other materials, Papyex® is employed in a diversity of industries.

Key properties for sealing

Compressibility
---
up to its max density of 2.25
Elastic recovery
---
an elastic recovery capacity of the order of 10%
Low creep rate
---
within its working range and up to high specific pressures
Self lubricating
---
with a low coefficient of friction (less than 0.10 with steel)
Workability
---
easily cut into shape or wound into sealing rings.
Ageing resistant
---
high ageing resistance not influenced by temperature
Chemical inertia
---
with no binders Papyex® resists most chemical agents
Temperature resistant
---
in reducing atmospheres -196°C to 2500°C. In oxygen up to 450°/550°C
Anisotropic
---
electromechanical properties vary considerably through or across Papyex®
Irradiation resistant
---
no visible effects at 10²² neutron/cm²
Easy application
---
with low adherance Papyex® replaces elastomers, PTFE, rubberised asbestos

Uses beyond sealing

Papyex® can be used to make ultra thin non brittle resistors in complex shapes, used particularly in experimental furnaces. It can also be used as an induction heater as Papyex® exhibits similar induction coupling properties to conventional electrographites.

Papyex® can be exploited to make thermal shielding for furnaces. Used on its own or as a surface application to Carbon/Graphite felts its impermability provides protection against erosion by corrosive vapours and gases used in forced cooling. Its low transverse thermal conductivity and reflective power increases insulating efficiency that is unaffected by pressure or temperature variations.

Its ability to be readily shaped means Papyex® can be applied to structures often difficult to protect such as tubular heating elements.

Extend the life of expensive moulds by using Papyex® as a liner to resist penetration of certain metals or alloys and assist in product removal.

Papyex® is not affected by semi or molten glass. It does not scratch still hot moulded products or cause localised cooling (no glazing). This makes Papyex® ideal for gland packings, support plates and for the replacement of undesirable Asbestos components.

Availability

In standard form Papyex® is available in two base grades that are produced in both roll and sheet format in a range of thicknesses from starting from 0.2mm. Papyex® is also supplied with a number of treatments to improve resistance to sticking, corrosion or oxidisation.

In sheet form reinforcement materials have been added to increase the strength of our product for arduous applications.

Our full range is too expansive to detail here, please contact us for additional information or our full brochure.
